Promo Guidelines & Consequences
Why do we need to do promos?
Promos are an essential part of sports entertainment. They help build storylines and rivalries to get the fans and in our case, the players interested in the match. This league simulates real life pro wrestling and without promos, we’re just playing matches and many players lose interest.
Let's make the best out of our superstars by utilizing known knowledge of them and also our own creativity!
Understanding The Match card
Superstar/PSN ID:
Very straight forward, this will most of the time simply have a players name. However, there will also be times where the player that wins or loses the match is the one required to write the promo.
Promo types:
These are simply the style of promo you are being required to write (next section explains in further details)
Prerequisite:
This is when the promo should be done in relation to the match you’re booked for. The most common examples are
- Before the match
- After the match
- After *Insert superstar* promo
Description:
This is the general message the GM wants you to deliver. This is simply a bullet point, it is your duty to remember weather your superstar is a heel or face, and to deliver the message in an authentic way of how that superstar would deliver that message.
Completed:
Simply a way to keep track of who has fulfilled their promo. Missing a promo is as bad as missing a match. You won’t get them every single week, but every single week you should check the promo section first thing and see if one is being requested of you.
More to come on the consequences of not doing promos.
Example
Promo Requirement types
Backstage Interview:
Typically involves an interviewer and your superstar backstage. Very simple and common format. You get asked a few questions, and then you reply (or not)
Self-promotion:
A Superstar can either just cut a backstage promo without an interviewer or more commonly make their way to the ring, and speak what’s on their mind in a heel or face manner.
Interruption:
This is typically done during another superstar’s promo (could be in-ring or backstage)
Aggressive Call Out:
You challenge a particular superstar to a match or a brawl. Typically there’s a reason to have a call out of this manner.
Passive Call Out:
You call an opponent out because you want to speak to them. This type of promo is typically used to show respect. It can also be used for a GM to speak on some issues with a superstar publicly.
Open challenge:
This promo type is typically for a champion. However, it can also be used to initiate a rivalry between two superstars or to set up a return of a superstar.
Attack:
These promo types typically involve several pictures and commentators speaking. Usually initiated by heel superstars but can also be used as retaliation by face superstars. These can happen either backstage, during an entrance, after a match and many other ways.
Post match + subtype
These are always done after the match and can be in combination with the above mentioned promos. Here are a few examples
- Post match interview
- Post match attack
- Post match self promote
Video package:
No, you don’t have to make a video of your superstar and post it. However, if you have the time and want to, you can. These are done in a self-promote style but with random images of the superstar popping up.
How do I Write a Promo?
Where do I post them?
All required promos should be posted on discord in their appropriate channel of the show/division requesting it.
How should It look?
The format for promos should be with many spaces and 1-3 pictures (depends on promo length)
It shouldn’t be one huge block of text. There should be colons used for who is speaking. Italics style text for actions or crowd reactions. Bold text can be used for many things, to emphasize words or drastic changes in the environment.
Below is an example of what promos should look like
Mr. McMahon’s entrance theme plays
crowd cheers
Commentator: The boss is here!
[Insert picture]
*Mr. McMahon enters the ring with a mic*
Mr. McMahon: Welcome to Monday night RAW!
crowd cheers
[Insert Picture]
Raw cuts to Commercial break
Not following this format should be avoided as it makes the promos look very sloppy and hard to read. No one wants to read a 500 word block of text
Promo etiquette
Here are some miscellaneous things to keep In mind when cutting promos
- Wrestlegram is a fun tool to build storylines in a social media format. You may post as many as you’d like. However, only superstars from the following divisions/shows are allowed to use it. WWE, Women’s and PG Era superstar. The reason we don’t use wrestlegram for the Ruthless aggression and older legends is because it did not really exist in the way it does today.
- You should typically only do the promos required of you.
- One additional promo may be permitted as long as it doesn’t tarnish what the GM is looking for as far as storyline
- You should NEVER attack someone in a promo unless otherwise asked of you by the GM. You may request to do so and you might get the approval to do so.
- Using the appropriate commentary team, backstage interviewers and management team for the show/division in promos is very important.
Note: A list of appropriate extra figures is coming soon.
- Acknowledging real superstar accolades vs personal accolades is a tricky thing. In the WWE division we tend to use personal accolades since most of us have been here for several years with the same superstars. In the legends divisions we tend to use the superstars accolades in promos. For example, it’s ok to be Ric Flair and state you’ve won 16 world titles.
Consequences
The consequences for not doing your promos will not be pleasant. Here are a couple of scenarios that can take place.
Once in a while offender
- You will be warned by the General Manager
- If you don’t do your promo when it was required, you may be asked to change the type of promo as a second chance, or the GM May decide you don’t deserve a second chance for various reasons.
Habitually not doing Promos
Continuously missing promos can lead to the following consequences from your general manager.
- Not getting title matches or contender matches
- stripped of a championship
- Kicked out of a division
- Reassigned another superstar with lower promo requirements
- Being booked unfavorably (Handicap matches, unfair title defenses)
